How you can help – Get Involved in…

Gardening and DIY

Whether you’re green fingered or new to gardening, we welcome volunteers for:

  • planting, pruning, weeding, compost making, wildlife habitat work clearing leaves, preparing beds. Improve your skills whilst making new friends.
  • DIY – carrying out small repairs and maintenance tasks

If you’d like to roll up your sleeves for a few hours or more, we’d love to meet you.

We run a weekly gardening session every Tuesday 12.00-3pm where everyone is welcome.

Organisational Support

Behind the scenes the management team ( see Who We Are) work to ensure the continued smooth running of the garden. If you are passionate about the Leechwell Garden and want to give something back we would love to have your creative input. We need people with time, energy and a positive ‘can-do’ approach who can help with:

  • Fundraising and grant applications
  • Managing our Facebook page
  • Communications with local media
  • General organisation
  • Minute taking

We have monthly meetings where we deal with issues that arise; volunteers for the gardening; finances and fundraising and liaise with local council officers and councillors

Why we need your help

The LGA is made up of members of the community since its formation in 2010, who* have worked together – planning, imagining, organising, liaising with the council – to bring about the transformation of this land for the benefit of the people of Totnes.

The garden thrives because of the generosity, energy and care of people like you.

Situated in the heart of Totnes, Leechwell Garden is more than just green space — it’s a living community asset, a wildlife haven, and a place where people connect, relax and grow together.

Its continuation is completely dependent on the involvement of the community it serves.

Nature in town matters – Nature England recommends that the population has access to Green and Blue Open Space of a minimum area and maximum distance from their home. Totnes is an area of high need for more accessible green space with many homes being without gardens and LG is very important in improving this standard. And not just for people! This small green space (0.37 ha) in the heart of Totnes is an important nature network for wildlife.*

(*The Accessible Greenspace Standard’s focus is accessible natural green spaces for public access, providing contact with nature and contributing to nature recovery networks. Natural England website)

Why your help matters

Being a community garden means:

Run by the community, for the community

Council-run gardens ceased to exist many years ago due to local government cuts. Totnes has Borough Park as its largest public space with a small community run garden. Community action puts the flowers back into public spaces eg The Lamb, Totnes Gardens Group, the Shady Garden and of course, the Leechwell Garden.

Your support helps us plant, restore and maintain natural habitats — ensuring wildlife has a home and people have a space to reconnect with nature.

  • Community means everyone – with inclusivity at its core, the Leechwell Garden provides a welcoming space for all; families, older residents, visitors and local groups eg youth groups. It also hosts community events such as the Respect Festival. Your gift of time or resources helps ensure the garden remains  in community hands with its beautiful design, outstanding tended and wild-flower areas and truly local, management.
  • Keeping momentum: While much has already been achieved, there’s always work to be done — from fundraising to composting, designing publicity to creating new flower beds, whether managing the finances or organising repairs, there is always much to do to keep the garden running smoothly.

Open Times

Leechwell Garden is open daily. In winter, from 8:30 am until dusk; in summer, from 8:30 am until 8:30 pm or dusk (whichever comes first).
