The Leechwell Garden Association’s (LGA) primary purpose is:
Managing, in association with the landowner (SHDC), the public open space in Totnes known as the Leechwell Garden, for the benefit of the people of Totnes.
The objectives for the Garden build on and expand upon those defined at its inception in 2005 through the Design Our Space Community Project; namely:
- To provide and maintain a public green space for recreation, leisure and play in the heart of Totnes to benefit the health and wellbeing of the local community.
- To encourage people of all ages and abilities to care for and enjoy the garden, fostering community cohesion, a sense of shared responsibility and a connection to nature.
- To protect and support nature and the biodiversity of species in the garden through practical measures such as :-
- “No Mow” periods, allowing more wild areas to develop and thus provide food and habitats for vertebrates and invertebrates, eg slowworms, slugs
- planting plants (a) for their climate resilience (b) to provide year-round food for pollinators, birds and small mammals
- providing and maintaining human-made habitats for a diverse range of insects and other invertebrates, small mammals, reptiles and birds eg nesting boxes, compost heaps, bug hotels.
and to inform the public of these actions and their purposes.
- To advance our knowledge and conservation of heritage by protecting and maintaining the historic character and cultural significance of the site in Totnes, Devon, today and for future generations.

The Leechwell Garden Association works in partnership with South Hams District Council (SHDC) to jointly manage and maintain the garden.
The LGA was formed in January 2009 from the group, Design Our Space, and was the force behind the garden’s creation; fundraising and overseeing the installation of all major projects. 2023 and 2024 saw the resignation of 4 key founder members with a new management group emerging. We would welcome more members to help share this role.
Initially conceived of as a herb garden, it has evolved in response to ever changing conditions under the care of different lead gardeners, into today’s flower and shrub garden.

SHDC Owns the freehold land of Leechwell Garden and has ultimate responsibility for its maintenance and repair work, often through qualified craftsmen, and ensures the garden meets the required health and safety standards.
The LGA Committee meets at least four times a year. The current committee members, elected at the 2025 AGM, are:
- Claire Morley – Chair
- Paul Church – Treasurer
- Dot Spink – Secretary
- Mischa Matthews- Hill
- Robert Vint
- Belinda Batt
- Rory Batt
- David Martin – representing Heath Way Residents Company
